At Els Xiprers school, we have reflected on the playground in terms of ecosocial transition — that is, inhabiting an environment that is respectful of both people and the natural world.

Together with Arqbag and El Cabdell, we facilitated a very special participatory process that combined playful, arts-based pedagogical tools such as theatre and graphic representation. We discussed together what coexistence in the playground is like, which activities we engage in, which spaces we occupy, and how we care for the forest that is part of the school, among other things. We identified strengths and shortcomings, and from the latter, we developed proposals for transformation and improvement.

Through a Core Group of Children from various primary school years, we’ve been able to understand how we inhabit the playground — and wow, a lot really does happen there! We also designed a series of bridging activities to gather students’ voices and share the process with the rest of the school community.

Educational centres are key facilities in childhood development. In the school context, the architectural space and the relationships formed within it have a strong impact on the learning process and on the bonds that are built within educational communities.
