Serreta Garden

Water Harvesting Project

The project aims to make the most of the existing infrastructure and buildings to collect and store rainwater, with the goal of increasing the self-sufficiency of the Serreta Garden.

The Serreta Garden is an organic vegetable garden located in the La Floresta neighborhood (Sant Cugat del Vallès), near the Collserola Natural Park. This organic garden allows for the harvesting of zero-kilometer vegetables and offers various theoretical and practical workshops on organic gardening, as well as children’s activities.

The Serreta Garden is part of a group of industrial buildings currently used by various artists and artisans. These rectangular-plan buildings with dual-pitched roofs cover a total area of 520 m².

Project
The buildings in the complex offer an infrastructural opportunity for the collection of rainwater for later storage. Currently, the water from the roof flows directly into the adjacent stream that leads into the natural park.
This storage system allows us to increase the self-sufficiency of the garden (Serreta Gardens) during periods of drought, while also promoting responsible management of available natural resources.

Phase 1
During an on-site assessment, it was confirmed that the large warehouse already has gutters, and it was discovered that they currently discharge water directly into the ravine adjacent to the plot. In this first phase, the proposal is to connect the existing drainage system to the lower well, as it is the one with the least amount of water loss. From this well, water is distributed to the plot’s existing tanks and wells through the current pumping system.

In this first phase, no additional storage tanks are required, as the three existing wells are used to their full water storage capacity.

Phase 2
The second phase aims to collect all rainwater from the roofs of adjacent buildings. This requires incorporating a complementary storage system to enhance the water accumulation capacity of the existing wells.

The volume of stored water makes it possible to achieve full self-sufficiency in water use for irrigating the organic garden. This strengthens the project values of ecology and responsible resource management at the Serreta Gardens.
